About Your WA Driving Record

Whether you're ordering your own driving record, or pulling someone else's history, you can request it through the Washington Department of Licensing (DOL).

Your WA state driving record contains information about your past traffic accidents, violations, and convictions and can be used:

  • To adjust your car insurance rates and investigate claims.
  • In court and legal proceedings.
  • For background checks and pre-employment screenings.

Types of WA Driving Records

The Washington DOL offers the following types of driving records:

  • Complete driving records:
    • Used for official purposes.
    • Contain your entire driving history in Washington.
  • 3-year driving record abstracts:
    • Used by insurance agencies.
    • Contain the past 3 years of your Washington driving history.
  • Employment driving records.
    • Used by employers during background checks.
    • Contain your complete WA driving history.
  • Volunteer driver records.
    • Used by volunteer organizations to screen volunteer drivers.
  • School bus driver records:
    • Used by school districts for school bus driver pre-employment screenings.

What Information Does Your Driving Record Include?

Your Washington driving record contains information about your past:

  • Convictions.
  • Traffic violations.
  • Traffic accidents.
  • Driver's license suspensions, revocations, and cancellations.
  • Failures to appear in court.

Employer, Insurance Agency, & Attorney Requests

You can order another person's WA driving record if you are or part of any of the following:

  • Attorney.
  • Law enforcement or government agency.
  • Employer or business performing pre-employment screenings or background checks.
  • Insurance company.
  • Transit authority agency.
  • Volunteer organization.
  • School district.
  • State college or university.

You can order someone else's Washington driving record either by mail or in person. You cannot order it from the WA DMV online. You will receive the WA driving record in the mail within 14 days after your request has been processed.

Order in Person or By Mail

To request a Washington driving record by mail or in person, you'll need:

  • A completed Driving Record Request (Form DR-500-009). Be sure to include:
    • Your personal information (including your mailing address, email, or fax number).
    • The driver's name, Washington driver license number, and date of birth.
    • Which type of driving record you are requesting.
  • A letter on company letterhead indicating the reason for your request and your relationship to the driver, if you are an insurance agency or an attorney.
  • Payment. See the “Fees For a WA Driving Record" section below.

NOTE: If you need to order multiple driver records, you must complete a separate Driving Record Request (Form DR-500-009) for each one.

Please allow 14 days to receive your driving record by mail.

Order Your Own Washington Driving Record

You can order your own Washington driving record online, by mail, or in person.

If you just want to check the status of your WA driver's license, visit the WA DOL website and enter your driver's license number.

Online Request

When you order your WA driving record online, it will be available to print or save to your computer as a PDF. You will not receive a copy in the mail.

You will need a Washington License Express account before you can order your driving record online.

To order your WA driving record online, visit the Washington Department of Licensing website and provide:

  • Your WA driver's license number.
  • Your Social Security number (SSN).
  • The type of driving record you need.
  • Payment for the $15 fee. See the “Fees For a WA Driving Record" section below.

By-Mail Request

If you order a Washington driving record by mail, you will receive it in the mail 14 days after your request has been processed.

To request your driving record by mail, you'll need:

  • A completed Driving Record Request (Form DR-500-009).
  • Payment for the $15 fee (see the “Fees For a WA Driving Record" section below).

In-Person Requests

To request your driving record in person, visit your local Washington DMV office with:

  • Your WA driver's license or another form of photo identification.
  • Payment for the $15 fee. See the “Fees For a WA Driving Record" section below.

You will receive your WA driving record either immediately, if it's accessible online, or in the mail within 14 days.

Correct an Error on Your Driving Record

If you believe there is an error on your Washington driving record, contact the Washington Department of Licensing at:

  • (360) 902-3900.
    OR
  • 711, for hearing impaired customers.

Fees for a WA Driving Record

It will cost $15 for a driving record in Washington.

If you're ordering a driving record in person at a WA DMV office, you can pay by:

  • Cash.
  • Check.
  • MasterCard credit/debit card. *
  • American Express credit/debit card. *
  • Some VISA credit/debit cards. *

* Driving record transactions completed with a credit/debit card will incur an additional convenience fee. Credit/debit cards are not accepted in:

  • Coulee Dam.
  • Davenport.
  • Friday Harbor.
  • Forks.
  • Goldendale.
  • Newport.
  • Republic.
  • South Bend.

If ordering a Washington driving record by mail, payment must be made by check or money order made payable to “Department of Licensing."
