Moving Out of State in Nevada

Permanent Moves

Address Change

If you're leaving the Silver State on a permanent basis, you will still need to notify the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) of the change within 30 days of the move.

Fortunately, it's easy to accomplish this task. Complete a change of address application and then either take it to a DMV office location, fax it to (775) 684-4992, or mail it to:

  • Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles
  • 555 Wright Way
  • Carson City, NV 89711

License Plates

After receiving your license plates from your new state, you should surrender your Nevada plates to the DMV, although you won't be penalized for failing to do so.

To release your Nevada plates, you can hand them over inside a DMV location (don't use the drop box).

If that's not practical, mail the plates to:

  • Department of Motor Vehicles
  • 555 Wright Way
  • Carson City, NV 89711

It's wise to send the plates via certified mail, with a return signature required. Be sure to include your name, address, and phone number.

Because you're no longer a resident of Nevada, you won't qualify for a refund on the unused portion of your registration.

Insurance

Don't forget to alert your vehicle insurance company about your move.

If you receive a request from the Nevada DMV to update your insurance records, you can quickly dispose of the matter online by using the Insurance Verification Response system.

Temporary Moves

Address Change

If you're moving outside the state on a temporary basis, you will still need to alert the DMV within 30 days of the move.

To do so, complete a change of address application and then either take it to a DMV office location, fax it to (775) 684-4992, or mail it to:

  • Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles
  • 555 Wright Way
  • Carson City, NV 89711

You will receive a sticker listing your new address to place on the flip side of your driver's license. If you're making the change in person, you can pay to receive a temporary license.

Registration

You may also opt for a new registration containing your current address.

To do so, complete a duplicate registration form and bring it to a DMV office location along with the $5 payment.

You may also send the completed form to:

  • Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles
  • 555 Wright Way
  • Carson City, NV 89711

Be sure to include a check, money order, or credit authorization form to cover the fee.

You may also fax the form to (775) 684-4992, along with a credit authorization form for payment.

Car Insurance

Remember to tell your car insurance company about your move.

If you receive a request from the Nevada DMV to update your insurance records, use the online Insurance Verification Response system to quickly update your records.
