Bill of Sale Requirements in Nebraska

NE Bill of Sale Basics

Whenever private individuals arrange to buy and sell motor vehicles, they should complete a Bill of Sale. This form provides the seller with a receipt for the transaction and gives the buyer legal documentation of his/her purchase.

As a courtesy, the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles has created a Bill of Sale form that you may use for your motor vehicle transactions. The state does not require a bill of sale, but does allow its official use in certain circumstances related to transferring the title on a vehicle.

Nebraska Bill of Sale Requirements

Whether or not you use the state's form, your bill of sale should contain the following essential information:

  • The buyer and seller's:
    • Full legal name.
    • Address.
    • Phone number.
    • Signature.
  • The make, model, and year of the vehicle being sold.
  • The vehicle identification number (VIN).
  • The purchase price.
  • The date of the transaction.
  • The signature of a Notary Public who has witnessed the transaction.

Use a ballpoint pen to complete the Bill of Sale form and write as neatly as possible. An illegible form will make it difficult for the Nebraska DMV to complete your vehicle's title transfer.
