Replacing a Lost Title in Missouri
Replacing a Lost Title in Missouri
Losing your vehicle title can be very frustrating, especially when you need it to sell your vehicle or complete the registration process in a different state. It's easy to lose track of those flimsy little papers. You can actually get a duplicate title if yours has been damaged, destroyed, lost, or stolen. Fortunately, the process of applying for a duplicate title in Missouri is not too complex.
All new and duplicate titles are handled through the Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR). There are several steps to take care of this process, but it's relatively painless.
Continue reading this page to get all the details you need to get your duplicate title and/or release your lien.
Applying for a Duplicate Title
You can apply for your duplicate Missouri title a couple different ways: by mail or in person at your local MO DOR office.
To apply for your replacement title, you'll need to:
- Download and complete the Application for Missouri Title and License (Form DOR-108) or grab a copy at your local office.
- Include your Missouri address.
- Under the "Notary-Dup. Title Only" section on the application, note the reason why you need a duplicate title and complete the applicable information.
- Surrender your current title, if you are applying for a duplicate title because it has been damaged.
- Have a notary witness your signature on the application.
- Submit payment for the duplicate title fee. See "Fees & Payment Information" below for more information.
- Drop off your application and payment at your local DOR office or mail everything to the address listed below.
NOTE: If you are selling or purchasing a vehicle without the title, the vehicle owner must apply for the duplicate title with the Missouri Department of Revenue. Otherwise, the DOR will not acknowledge the sale. The DOR also advises sellers to apply for a duplicate title if the current one is mutilated or illegible.
Fees & Payment Information
The fees you must pay are $14.50 for the duplicate title including the $6 for processing.
Make your check or money order payable to Missouri Department of Revenue (no cash). If you decide to pay with a check, be sure to include your name, address, date of birth, daytime phone number, Social Security number, and driver's license number on the check itself.
You'll need to send all materials and payment to the following address:
Motor Vehicle Bureau
301 West High Street
P.O. Box 2046
P.O. Box 100
Jefferson City, MO 65105
NOTE: if you have a lien on the vehicle, you will have to get a Notice of Lien, Lien Release, or Authorization to Add/Remove Name From Title (Form DOR-4809) notarized. You can request this form from your local office or fill out an online request form.
Status of Your Duplicate Title Application?
If you have not received your title by mail, you can check the status online at the MO DOR website.
After waiting for more than 4 weeks to receive your title, submit the Online Check Status of a Title Request Form at the DOR website.
