Moving Out of State in Michigan
Permanent Moves
If you're leaving Michigan permanently, you should cancel your registration and license plates with the state.
If you already have your plates and registration from your new state, you may stop by a Secretary of State branch office to cancel your Michigan plates and registration.
If not, after moving you can write a letter indicating that you wish to cancel your registration and plates and send it to:
- Michigan Department of State
- Driver Update Unit
- Lansing, MI 48918
You don't need to give the SOS your new address. Also, your new state will send your Michigan license back for cancellation.
Find all the information you need to finish your moving requirements with the DMV.
Temporary Moves
Those leaving the state on a temporary basis must tell the SOS their new address.
You may change your address at a branch office. Or, complete a change of address form and mail it to:
- Michigan Department of State
- P.O. Box 30764
- Lansing, MI 48909-8264
No matter the method, you won't receive a new license, but instead be given a sticker containing your temporary address to place on the back of your license or state identification card.
There's no charge to change your address.
If you don't change your address with the state, your license might be suspended.
By Mail vs. In-Person
Be aware if you're changing your address by mail, a verification letter is sent to your old address. So, if you don't want that to happen, you'll need to change your address in person.
Surrendering License Plates?
You are not required to surrender your Michigan license plates after relocating to a new state.
