Obtaining a Duplicate ME Registration

The Maine BMV has offers a variety of ways to replace a lost, stolen, or damaged registration, based on your eligibility.

You can request a replacement registration:

Online (and save a trip to the BMV).
OR
In person at your local BMV office.

Online
In Person

Online Replacements

Online requests for duplicate vehicle registrations are available for Maine residents who:

Are ONLY requesting a registration certificate, NOT a plate sticker.
Have a vehicle that is currently registered.
Do NOT have an SR-22 insurance requirement.
Are more than 7 days away from your registration expiring.

Visit the BMV’s online portal and answer the prompts to order your registration. The online process will require:

Access to a printer.
Your license plate number.
Your last name and date of birth.
- If more than one person is listed as a registered owner, then provide the information of the first registrant.
Payment for your duplicate registration.
- While the base fee is $5, your online fee includes funds to maintain the web service; it will likely be slightly higher than requesting a replacement car registration at a BMV office.

After you finish the process, you can expect your replacement registration to arrive in the mail within 7 business days.

In-Person Replacements

To request a replacement registration in person, visit your local BMV office with:

A completed Request for a Duplicate Registration Certificate (Form MV-11).
- You will need to know:
  - The year and make of your vehicle.
  - Your license plate number.
Payment for the $5 duplicate registration fee.

Be prepared to show proof of identity, including your name and birth date.

Replacing a Lost Registration Sticker in Maine

The Maine BMV makes it easy to replace a lost registration sticker. You can generally go in person to the town office where you registered your vehicle or to any local BMV office.

You'll typically need to provide the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) with:

A copy of your current registration.
Payment for the replacement fee.
