Replacing a Lost Registration in Massachusetts
Duplicate Registration & License Plates in Massachusetts
If your Massachusetts vehicle registration card or license plates are lost, stolen, or damaged, you should request replacements with the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) as soon as you are able.
Driving without your vehicle's current registration information can cause you problems if you are pulled over. If you can't provide the law enforcement officer with your current registration papers, you may face additional penalties and fines on top of the ones you may already be facing for the violation you committed.
If you drive around without your MA license plates or license plate decals attached to your vehicle, you will likely be pulled over, ticketed, and fined.
On this page you'll find an overview of your options for replacing your vehicle registration certificate and license plates.
NOTE: If you believe your registration items were stolen, you should also contact the local authorities to file a police report.
If you have specific questions about replacing your registration/license plates, please contact the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) directly.

How to Replace Lost License Plates in Massachusetts
If you've lost your MA vehicle tags, you can only get replacements in person at your local Massachusetts RMV or by phone. If you've only lost one tag, you'll be given a temporary permit to keep in the car until the replacement tag arrives. If you've lost both plates, you'll have to apply for a new set of plates with new numbers.
You cannot apply for green plates with the same number. If your single green plate is lost or stolen, you'll be given a set of the new red and white plates as replacements; place one plate on the front of your vehicle and the other on the rear.
To request new plates over the phone call the MA RMV at:
- (857) 368-8000.
- (800) 858-3926.
Plates cost $10 each to replace.
