Replacing a Lost Registration in Massachusetts

If you get pulled over without your vehicle registration card, you could wind up with a costly ticket. Set your mind and wallet at ease—replace your lost, damaged, or stolen registration as soon as possible.

Luckily, getting a duplicate registration through the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles is quick and easy. Let’s walk through your options below.

Obtain a Duplicate MA Registration

The MA RMV gives you a few options for replacing your registration. If you like, you can even do it from home!

You can request a duplicate:

  • Online.
  • By phone.
    OR
  • In person.

IMPORTANT: Leased Vehicle Registrations

If you lease your vehicle, your duplicate MA registration will be sent to the leasing company. To get the copy yourself, request your replacement in person—see below for steps.

Online

To request your registration receipt online, visit the MA RMV’s online portal and follow the prompts. If you’ve changed your address recently, make sure you update it with the RMV* BEFORE completing the process. You can use the RMV’s online portal to do so.

Be ready to provide your:

  • Name.
  • Birth date.
  • License, ID, or permit number.
  • Registration number.
  • Payment for the $25 duplicate registration fee.

You’ll be given the option to print your registration immediately, OR you can have it mailed to you. If you choose to have it mailed, you should receive it within 10 days.

If you lease your vehicle, the registration will be sent to the leasing company. To get the copy yourself, request your replacement in person—see below for steps.

By Phone

To replace your registration card over the phone, call the RMV contact center at:

  • (857) 368-8000, if your area code is:
    • 339, 617, 781, 857.
    • From outside of Massachusetts.
  • (800) 858-3926, if your MA area code IS NOT listed above.
  • (877) 768-8833, if you’re in MA and have trouble hearing.

The RMV contact center is open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Be prepared to provide the same information listed above for online replacement requests. Once the RMV has approved your request, it can take up to 10 days to receive your duplicate registration in the mail.

In Person

You can replace your vehicle registration in person at any RMV location, or at certain AAA service centers if you are a member. Be ready to provide your:

  • Driver’s license or federal ID.
  • Registration number.
  • Social security number (SSN).
  • Payment for the $25 duplicate registration fee.
    • Different places accept varying forms of payment. Contact your local RMV before you make your trip.
