ID Cards in Colorado

If you do not have a driver's license in Colorado, you can use a Colorado ID card as an alternative form of photo identification. You can use it for a number of things, including proving your identity when voting, making credit card transactions, and proving your age.

REAL ID Cards in Colorado

CO ID Card Eligibility Requirements

If you are a resident of Colorado, you can apply for a CO identification (ID) card at any age. You must be able to prove your:

  • Identity, including your:
    • Full name.
    • Age.
  • Lawful presence in the U.S.
  • CO residency.
  • Social Security number (SSN).

IMPORTANT!

You cannot hold both a Colorado driver's license and identification card at the same time. If you hold a current CO driver's license, you must surrender it when you apply for a CO ID card.

How to Get a Colorado ID Card

To apply for a Colorado ID card, you must visit a Colorado Department of Revenue (DOR) driver's license office in person. The driver licenses offices are run by the DOR's Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

You will need:

  • Proof of your:
    • Name, identity, age, and lawful presence in the U.S.
    • Social Security number.
    • Colorado residency (2 documents dated within 1 year).
      • If you are a minor, you may use your parent/guardian's address on their driver's license as proof of residency.
  • Payment for the applicable fee (see the Fees section below).

Documents proving your name, identity, age, and lawful presence must be certified originals, certified amended originals, or certified copies. Visit the Colorado DOR website for a full list of acceptable documents.

CO Identification Card Fees

Your Colorado ID card will cost:

  • $12.67, if you're under 60 years old.
  • Free, if you're 60 years old or older.

You may be charged an additional convenience fee when visiting certain county driver's license offices.

Renew a Colorado ID Card

You can renew your Colorado ID card online, by mail, or in person.

If you are 21 years old or older, you can renew your CO ID card anytime before it expires. If you're younger than 21 years old, you cannot renew your ID until you turn 21 years old.

Change Your ID Card Address or Name

Change Your Address

You can change your address with the Colorado DOR either online, by mail, or in person. You do not need to have a new CO identification card issued.

Online

To change your address online, visit the CO DMV online services portal.

You will need to provide your:

  • CO ID card number.
  • Date of birth.
  • Social Security number (SSN).

Once you've changed your name online, you can print your own label with your new address and attach it to the back of your Colorado ID card.

By Mail or in Person

To change your address on your CO ID card by mail or in person, complete the CO DOR Change of Address (Form DR 2285) and mail it to the address specified on the form, or take it to your local CO DMV driver license office.

You can then print your own label with your new address and attach it to the back of your Colorado ID card.

Change Your Name

If you change your name, you must inform the Colorado DOR and get an updated CO ID card.

Update Your Social Security Card First!

You must update your records with the Social Security Administration (SSA) FIRST before changing your name with the CO DOR.

You must visit a CO DOR driver's license office in person. You cannot change your name online or by mail.

Replace a Lost or Stolen CO ID Card

If your CO identification card is lost or stolen, you should report it to your local law enforcement to reduce the chances of identity theft.

You're required to visit a CO DMV driver's license office in person to replace your CO ID card.
