Dealer Licensing in Louisiana

In Louisiana, the type of dealer license you’re applying for dictates which state agency you’ll need to work with: 

  • New car dealer license: Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC).
  • Used car dealer license: Used Motor Vehicle Commission (LUMVC).

Each commission provides information specific to the type of license you’re applying for. On this page, we’ll be focusing on used car dealer licenses.

Louisiana Used Car Dealer License

The Louisiana Used Motor Vehicle Commission (LUMVC) issues licenses for used car dealers and salespeople.

We’ve outlined some of the major requirements for used car dealer licenses below. Refer to the application packet or contact the LUMVC at (225) 925-3870 or (800) 256-2977 for additional details.

Application Requirements

 The LUMVC requires the following items when applying for your LA used car dealer license:

  • A completed:
  • Proof of:
    • Completion OR enrollment in an approved educational training seminar.
      • If you’ve just enrolled, you need to attend the seminar within 60 days of your license issuance.
    • Zoning compliance.
      • A zoning authority official must sign the applicable document in the dealer application packet.
    • Garage liability insurance with $55,000 in coverage.
    • If applicable, rental insurance (see the application packet for the required minimum amounts).
    • A $50,000 surety bond.
  • A copy of your rental agreement for the dealership’s premises IF you’re renting with the option to purchase.
  • Per applicant background check fee of $35. IF they have been convicted or pled guilty to a non-traffic crime in the last 10 years.
  • Payment for the $400 license fee, plus all other applicable fees.

You can submit your application packet by:

  • E-mailing all documents to the LUMVC and paying license fee online. If you use this method, you may also mail your payment separately. OR  you may mail your documents and fees to:

Allow the LUMVC at least 14 business days to process your application.

Remember, to receive approval for your dealer license you’ll need to have an established place of business, meeting the requirements explained below.

Business Location Requirements

As mentioned above, you must have an established place of business to qualify for a used car dealer license that meets the following criteria:

  • The location is used only for selling used motor vehicles.
  • Your dealership has a permanent sign:
    • With your exact business name.
    • Measuring at least 16 square feet.
    • In the front of the business and visible from the road.
  • There’s an office where you:
    • Maintain books and records related to the conduct of the business.
    • Have a business telephone listed and connected/working at all times.

A Louisiana state inspector will inspect your dealership. Once you pass the inspection, the Louisiana Used Motor Vehicle Commission will issue your dealer license!
