Bill of Sale Basics
A bill of sale is a handy document for you, the buyer or seller of a vehicle, to use as a receipt of that sale and to formalize the transfer of a car from one person to another. In Louisiana, a notarized bill of sale is required when you buy or sell a car from or to a private party in order to complete a title transfer.

Louisiana Bill of Sale Specifics
A notarized Bill of Sale is a legal document showing a transfer in ownership of a vehicle. A Bill of Sale includes:
- The names and signatures of the buyer and seller.
- The year, make, and vehicle identification number (VIN).
- The date of sale and final sale price.
- The signature of a notary public.
When you purchase a vehicle outright, it's important the seller provides you with the current title, signed by both of you. You may also want a copy of the bill of sale, which usually stays with the seller as proof of the transaction.
If you are the vehicle's seller, keep a notarized bill of sale for the transaction.
