Hawaii Bill of Sale Requirements
To complete a legally recognized bill of sale in Hawaii you will need to provide the following:
- A vehicle description and vehicle identification number (VIN).
- Names of the buyer and seller.
- The county and state where you bought or sold the vehicle.
- An odometer reading.
- Final sale price.
- Notarized signature of the seller(s).
Where to Get a Bill of Sale
The City and County of Honolulu offers a Bill of Sale (Form CS-L(MVR)40) online. It also offers a Bicycle/Moped Bill of Sale (Form CS-L(SS) 47). These forms may be used in any Hawaiian county.

Why Use a Bill of Sale
While a bill of sale isn't required for most vehicle transactions, you might want to consider using one for your car sale and/or purchase.
If you are the seller of a car, completing a bill of sale can provide additional protection from liability once you release the car to the buyer.
As the buyer, having a bill of sale acts as a receipt and proof of purchase for your new car.
