Voter Registration in Georgia
The Georgia Secretary of State offers several registration options. Even GA residents currently overseas can register to vote.
Read below to learn more about who's eligible to register to vote, options for registration, military considerations, and more.
Voter Eligibility in Georgia
You must meet certain eligibility requirements to register to vote in Georgia. You can register if you are:
- A United States citizen.
- A legal resident of a Georgia county.
- At least 17 1/2 years old.
- You must be 18 years old before or on Election Day.
Even if you meet these requirements, you are NOT eligible to vote if you:
- Have been deemed by a judge to be mentally incompetent.
- Are incarcerated, on parole or on probation for a felony conviction.*
*Once you have completed your period of supervised release you will need to re-register to vote.

Alternatively, you can contact your local board of registrars to confirm your status.

Register to Vote in Georgia
To register to vote, you must complete a State of Georgia Application for Voter Registration.
You can submit the application form:
- Online
- By mail.
- In person.
Online
Eligible Georgia voters can register to vote online with the SOS. To use the online voter registration system you must have a valid Georgia driver's license or ID card.
By Mail
The mail-in GA voter registration application is available online and at many locations throughout your county. You can:
- Download and complete the State of Georgia Application for Voter Registration.
OR
- Get a copy of the application from:
- Your county board of registrar's office.
- The public library.
- Public assistance offices.
- Colleges and universities.
- Other government offices.
Mail the application to the address on the form. You should receive your voter registration card by mail within 4 weeks. If you have not received your card after 4 weeks, contact your county board of registrars.
In Person
You can register to vote in person with the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) when you:

Proof of Identification
If you're voting in person in GA, you're required to show a current photo ID. Accepted IDs include:
- A GA driver's license (can be expired).
- A valid employee photo ID issued by any entity of the US. Government, or any county or entity of the state.
- A valid U.S. passport.
- A valid U.S. military ID (with photo).
- A valid tribal ID (with photo).
- Any valid photo ID issued by the state or federal government.
- This includes free Voter ID cards. (See below).
Georgia Voter ID Cards
You can request a free Voter Identification card if you don't possess one of the accepted forms of ID listed above.
You can get one of these cards at any county board of registrar's office or from your local Department of Driver Services office. To obtain a Voter Identification card, you'll need to show:
- A photo ID document.
- If you don't have one, you can show an approved document that doesn't have a photo but has your full legal name and birth date.
- Proof of your date of birth.
- Proof that you are currently a registered voter.
- Documentation that provides your name and residential address.

Military & Overseas Voter Registration
Military personnel and their dependents, as well as other Georgia residents currently overseas, can register to vote using the FPCA, or Voter Registration and Absentee Ballot Request Federal Post Card Application (Form 76). This form enables you to both register and request an absentee ballot at the same time.
You can complete the form and send it to your county board of registrar's office by:
- E-mail.
- Fax.
- Mail.
You can also complete your FPCA online through the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) website.
Out-of-State Residents
College students and other permanent Georgia residents temporarily living or traveling out of the state can complete their Georgia voter registration by mail.

NOTE: If you know you'll be outside of Georgia during the election, you should request an absentee ballot.
Voter Registration Deadlines in GA
Registration deadlines are determined by the date of an election. Election deadlines can be found on the GA SOS website.
If you do not register to vote by the registration deadline, you will not be able to vote in the upcoming election.
Changing Your Voter Address
You must update the address on your voter registration when you move within the state of Georgia.
The notification and voting guidelines vary based on:
- Where you are moving.
- The date of the next election.
Moving Within Your County
If you move to a new address in the same county, you have to submit notification to your county board of registrar's office. You can notify them by:
- Sending a letter that provides your new address.
- Sending a new application for registration. (See Register to Vote in GA above.)
If you do not notify the county office by at least the fifth Monday before an election, you may vote at your previous polling place.
Moving to a Different County
When you move to a different county, your voting location depends on how soon the next election is:
- If you move to a different county within the fifth Monday of an upcoming election, you can vote at your previous polling place.
- If you move to a different county more than the fifth Monday before an upcoming election, you must register to vote in your new county. You will not be eligible to vote in your previous county.

Replacing a Lost GA Voter Registration Card
You can request a replacement precinct card (voter registration card) from your county registration office if you have:
- Lost your precinct card.
- Not received your card within 4 weeks after you applied for registration.
