Georgia Motorcycle Manual

The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) publishes a Motorcycle Operator's Manual (REV 2016) for motorcycle license and motorcycle permit information.

The GA DDS offers:

  • A motorcycle license (Class M).
  • A motorcycle permit (Class MP).
  • A motorcycle endorsement (M) on other classes of licenses.

Read more about these types of licenses on our Motorcycle License page.

You'll need a motorcycle license to operate any vehicle with:

  • A saddle style seat for the operator.
  • Up to 3 wheels.
  • An engine of 51 cc or larger.

NOTE: Mopeds are defined as cycles with engines up to 50 cc. They are NOT considered motorcycles.

Safety Equipment for Motorcycles

The GA DDS motorcycle manual explains in detail the equipment you need to safely and legally ride a motorcycle, including:

  • Helmets and helmet laws.
  • Protective equipment for your face and eyes.
  • Appropriate clothing.

You'll also find information to help you select a motorcycle, use its controls, and make sure it's working correctly.

Basic Motorcycle Operation

The motorcycle manual focuses on safe operation of a motorcycle.

It covers laws and regulations related to riding a motorcycle, from basic operation to handling common mechanical issues, like a flat tire.

You'll also find information about hazards, such as objects in the air or on the road.

The motorcycle manual DOES NOT have a comprehensive explanation of all GA traffic laws. See the GA Driver's Manual for general driving instruction.

Alcohol & Drug Use

You'll find plenty of information about operating a motorcycle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs (known as a DUI or DWI) in the GA DDS motorcycle manual.

In addition to GA DUI and DWI laws, you'll also find an explanation of the effects of driving while intoxicated and the consequences if you're convicted.

Motorcycle License Tests

You must pass 2 tests to receive your Georgia motorcycle license:

  • A written knowledge test based on information found in the motorcycle manual.
    AND
  • A skills test on a motorcycle.

The motorcycle manual contains all of the information you need to pass the motorcycle license written knowledge test.

Not Sure If You're Ready For Your Motorcycle Exam?

Try passing a motorcycle license practice test first to increase your chances of passing on your first try.

Detailed GA skills test information is also presented in the manual, including:

  • The specific skills you'll be required to demonstrate.
  • The test pattern you'll follow.

NOTE: A motorcycle safety course can help you learn and practice the skills that you need.

Insurance for Your GA Motorcycle

You MUST have motorcycle insurance in order to legally operate your motorcycle on public roads.

In Georgia, you must carry minimum liability insurance of:

  • $25,000 for bodily injury, per person involved in an accident.
  • $50,000 for bodily injury, per accident.
