How to Register a Motorcycle in Florida
In Florida, your motorcycle's registration will be valid for 1 year. The process for registering your new bike will differ based on how you bought it—from a dealer, or from a private seller.
Dealership Purchases
After buying a motorcycle from a Florida dealership, the dealer has 30 days to handle the title and registration paperwork for you. The DHSMV will then send your permanent title and registration documents to you by mail.
You'll pay your registration taxes and fees to your dealer—for a breakdown of what you'll owe, check out our section on motorcycle registration fees.
Private Purchases
When purchasing a motorcycle from a private seller, you'll need to complete the transfer of title and registration yourself.
Head to your local county tax office and:
- Provide a bill of sale.
- Check out our Bill of Sale Requirements page for a full breakdown of what you'll need on the form.
- Bring the completed and signed:
- Vehicle title.
- Application for Certificate of Title With/Without Registration (Form HSMV 82040).
- Separate Odometer Disclosure Statement and Acknowledgement (Form HSMV 82993) IF there is no room on the title.
- If the motorcycle has not been previously registered in FL, you will need to instead submit the VIN inspection form listed above.
- Pay the $10 base registration tax, plus all other applicable fees and taxes.
