Bill of Sale in Alaska
The Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles does not require a bill of sale for buying or selling a vehicle in the Last Frontier state. Rather, sellers must transfer the title to buyers, which you can read more about on our Title Transfer in Alaska page. A bill of sale can be helpful, though, in many situations related to buying or selling a vehicle in Alaska.
Why Use a Bill of Sale?
You may desire a bill of sale to record your vehicle purchase or sale for tax purposes, as a receipt for your files (which could be helpful if you move to a state requiring a bill of sale), or to protect against legal issues in the future. A bill of sale generally includes information about the transaction, such as:
- A vehicle description and vehicle identification number (VIN).
- Warranty information.
- The vehicle's final sale price.
- Names of the buyer and seller.
- The county and state where you bought or sold the vehicle.
