Renewing Your CDL in Wyoming
How to Renew
In Wyoming, you still have the alternative of renewing a commercial driver license (CDL) through the mail rather than appearing in person. When the CDL, which is valid for four years, is within 120 days of expiration, it triggers the Driver Services Program to launch a renewal notice to the applicant's last recorded address.
If you still happen to be under 21 years of age, this prompt will not occur until 90 days from the cessation date.
It is imperative that you keep the agency updated on any changes of address so the renewal document manages to find you in the place you currently inhabit.
Where to Send the Renewal Form
Once you complete the renewal form, you will need to dispatch it back to the division along with a copy of your current DOT medical examination document and a $20 extension fee. Mail all documents to:
- WYDOT
- Driver Services
- 5300 Bishop Blvd.
- Cheyenne, WY 82009-3340
Note that renewal by post is only offered every other four-year cycle; thus, once every eight years.
Renewing Hazardous Material Endorsements
If you are renewing a hazardous materials (hazmat) endorsement the service is not available by mail. You will still need the DOT Medical Examination Report, but you will also need your "threat potential" assessed by the Transportation Safety Administration (TAS). This new rule, which went into effect in 2005, springs from the Patriot Act and essentially includes undergoing and clearing a thorough federal background check. The requirements also involve a trip to a local TSA office for fingerprinting.
Information for the background check can be submitted online through the TSA website or by calling the TSA Help Desk at 1-877-429-7746. A fee of $89.25 is charged for the service, payable via e-check, credit or debit card. If those means of payment are not viable, you can take a money order made out for Integrated Biometric Technology (IBT) to one of the TSA offices when you go for fingerprinting. Wyoming has three TSA fingerprinting sites throughout the state:
- Casper
- 1842 Skyview Drive
- Casper, WY 82601
- Hours: Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5.p.m.
- Cheyenne
- Flying "J" Truck Plaza
- I-25 Exit #7
- Cheyenne, WY 82007
- Hours: Monday-Friday 8? a.m.-4 p.m.
- Rock Springs
- 1695 Sunset Drive, Suite #108
- Rock Springs, WY 82901
- Hours: 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Friday
Two forms of identification, a primary and a secondary as noted on the approved TSA list, are necessary to have the prints taken and verified.
TSA will notify you by letter regarding the results of the background check. If you are in the clear, then the next step involved is gathering all the documents necessary to extend the CDL (the letter from TSA, DOT medical exam, and renewal card) and visiting the nearest exam office.
The renewal cost is for a CDL is $20 and includes the endorsement fee.
