Expired License

If you allowed your Wyoming license to expire instead of renewing it, you will need to go through the entire examination process if you intend to apply for a new license. This involves passing written, vision, and driving tests. The same goes for drivers who moved to Wyoming and let their out-of-state license collect dust without renewing it.

Reinstatement Before Moving

If you have a suspended license and you opt to move from the scenic state of Wyoming, do not expect to merely saunter into your new state's DMV and get another license.

All states keep in touch by utilizing a database that allows them to access driving records. As soon as an examiner in your new state sees the suspension on your record, that will be the end of your application attempt in that state.

Instead, you will have to clear up the matter in Wyoming by having the suspended license reinstated. If the license is eligible for reinstatement, you will need to pay a $50 fee to clear the matter.

If the license still has time to serve under the suspension, then you will have to find another means to affirm who you are (i.e. apply for an ID card or passport) until the time you are entitled to reinstate.

Nonresident Violator Compact

Wyoming is an enforcing member of the Nonresident Violator Compact. This basically means that if you are nabbed for a violation in another state and fail to pay the fine, you risk losing your license.

That's what will happen if the state where you were issued the ticket is also an enforcing member of the compact and reports the failure of payment to the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT).

You will be sent a notice in the mail that your license is on the brink of suspension. You will also be allotted an amount of time to take care of the fine. When you pay it, you'll need to supply proof in the form of court receipts or something similar.

If you do not resolve the fine within the required time frame, your license will be put on indefinite suspension. To get it restored, you will not only need to take care of the outstanding fine―you will also have to pay a $50 reinstatement fee.

Implied Consent

When you applied for a Wyoming driver's license, you gave "implied consent" to have your blood alcohol content (BAC) tested by a police officer should you get pulled over. The tests can run the gamut from the standard breath test to a urine sample or blood draw.

If you refuse to submit to a chemical test, two things will occur. First, you will have your license taken away on the spot, and you will not see it again for six months. Second, a "Refusal" suspension will be posted to your driving record.

Accident Reporting

If you are a driver in an accident involving an estimated $1,000 in damage or resulting in an injury or death, you must fill out an Operator's or Owner's Traffic Accident Report. This report is to be completed within 10 days of the incident, whether you caused the accident or not. It is entirely separate from the police investigation paperwork.

Taking the time to complete the form requires patience and great attention to detail. Be sure to set aside a good chunk of time to work though it, as it can be rather complicated―especially if the accident was serious. Peruse these handy instruction guidelines before tackling the project. Once completed, mail the form to this address:

  • Wyoming Department of Transportation
  • Accident Records
  • 5300 Bishop Blvd.
  • Cheyenne, WY 82009-3340
