All West Virginians must renew their vehicle registrations each year. Don't worry about keeping up with the specific date―the WV DMV will send you a convenient reminder about 30 days before it expires.

To renew your registration, mail the reminder notice, proof of insurance, your personal property tax receipt, and the appropriate fees to the address listed on the registration reminder notice. (Your County Assessor handles your personal property taxes. Contact that office for more information.)

Of course, you can take the necessary paperwork and fees to your local DMV Regional Office, too; however, at this time there is no option to renew your WV registration online.

Note that you'll renew your RV, motorhome, custom-built car, and salvaged car in the same manner you'd renew a regular passenger vehicle.

No Registration Reminder?

No problem. You can download your own renewal notice. It's currently $30 for a car or truck under 800 pounds, plus an extra $10 for scenic plates.

Once you take care of that, you'll just follow the same registration renewal process as described above.

What is a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)?

Motorcycle Registration Renewal

You must renew your motorcycle registration by July 1 of every year. West Virginia sends a renewal notice in the mail.

You'll need to gather up the same paperwork (your reminder notice, proof of insurance, and personal property tax receipt) as well as the $16 motorcycle registration renewal fee.

You renew your WV motorcycle registration at your local DMV Regional Office or by mail. (The mailing address will be included on your renewal reminder.)

For further convenience, your County Sheriff's office can also handle your motorcycle registration renewal.

Motorboat Registration Renewal

Fortunately for West Virginia boaters, the DMV also mails motorboat registration renewal reminders. Why is this fortunate? Well, you need to renew your motorboat registration by April 1 of the last year on the registration card, but your registration is valid for three years! This gives you plenty of time to forget when you need to renew it!

To renew your WV motorboat registration, take the Application for Motorboat Renewal, along with your personal property tax receipt and appropriate fees to your local DMV Regional Office or mail it all to the address listed on your renewal notice.

Note that you can also pick up a motorboat renewal application at the DMV. You may even get one with your renewal reminder.

Motorboat registration renewal fees are the same as the regular registration fees .
