License Plate FAQs
Our License Plate and Placards and Drivers with Disabilities sections covers quite a bit of information about West Virginia license; however, we've compiled this list of some of the most frequently asked questions on the subject.
Where can I find information about all available WV license plates?
The West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) gives you an online peek at all available license plates including those for general issue, NASCAR, special organizations, and military.
Can anyone get a personalized license plate?
Only those folks with titled Class A vehicles can order personalized license plates. Class A vehicles include cars and pickup trucks weighing 8,000 pounds or fewer, and motorcycles.

How much do license plates cost?
Standard West Virginia license plates cost $30 at the time of registration.
Fees for standard graphic, scenic graphic, wildlife graphic, or personalized license plates vary. The WV DMV provides a detailed list of fees online.
My license plate is seriously damaged―you can't even see the numbers! How can I get a new one?
You can replace your license plate free of charge if it's time to renew; otherwise, you'll need to pay $5.50.
Download, print, and complete the Application for Duplicate Decal or Plate and submit it to your local DMV Regional Office. You can also mail it to:
- West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles
- 1800 Kanawha Blvd., East
- Building 3
- Charleston, WV 25317
I've either lost my license plate, or it's been stolen. How can I get a replacement?
The process to replace a lost or stolen WV license plate is the same as replacing a damaged one; however, you'll also need to contact the West Virginia State Police to file a report.
The fee is $5.50.
Should I remove my license plate if I'm selling my vehicle?
Yes! You were issued that license plate when you registered that car―unless, of course, you transferred it from another vehicle you used to own.
In any event, the new owner will need to register and title the vehicle in his or her name. The DMV will then issue a new license plate for the car.
If I move out of state, do I need to surrender my license plates?
Nope. You can surrender the plates by mailing them back to your local DMV office, but it's not required.
I just moved to West Virginia. How long do I have to apply for a new license plate?
New residents have 30 days to register and title their vehicles. This process includes applying for WV license plates.
Do out-of-state college students need WV license plates?
No. They don't need to transfer their driver's licenses, either.
However, once they fall in love with the mountains and decide to become permanent residents, the answer turns to yes.
Does the DMV offer antique plates?
Yes, it does. Actually, the state has two plates available especially for older vehicles: antique and classic.
Visit our License Plates & Placards page to learn the distinctions between the two, and how to apply for the plates.
