History of DMV

Still refer to the DMV as the Department of Motor Vehicles? Well, it's been a few years since that was its name.
In 1989, former governor Gaston Caperton consolidated all state agencies into departments. This made way for the new Department of Transportation, and changed the name of the Department of Motor Vehicles to the Division of Motor Vehicles.

The West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) is composed of seven divisions:
Together, these seven divisions of the WVDOT work to provide transportation services, safety and protection, information and education, revenue generation, and community and economic development.

Looks as if the West Virginia DMV has been pretty busy, doesn't it? Don't forget that aside from vehicle-related services the DMV also assists with organ donor information, voter registration, and registration with Selective Services.
