Replacing a Lost Registration in Wisconsin
Losing your registration certificate or plate decals can be a real headache. Fortunately, the Wisconsin Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has several easy and inexpensive options for replacing your lost registration items.

Duplicate WI Registration Requirements
The WI DMV allows you to order duplicate registration certificates and plate stickers:
- Online*.
OR - By mail.
Where to Find Your VIN
Your vehicle ID number (VIN) can be found on your:
- Title.
- Dashboard near the windshield on the driver’s side.
- Driver’s door jamb.
Either way, you’ll need your:
- Driver’s license or State ID number.
- Plate number.
- Vehicle identification number (VIN).
- Social security number.

*This option is available to individual vehicle owners and lessees only. Businesses are NOT able to use the online service.
Online Replacements
You can replace your Wisconsin registration online as long as you’re an individual vehicle owner or lessee. If you’re a business, you’ll need to follow the instructions for mail-in replacements.
To replace your registration or plate decals online*, visit the DMV’s online portal and provide your:
- Email address.
- Birth date.
- Last 4 digits of your Social Security number (SSN).
- Driver’s license or ID card number.
- Vehicle identification number (VIN).
- Payment for the $2 duplicate registration fee (with or without sticker).
- Convenience fees apply to credit and debit transactions, but NOT to Automated Clearing House (ACH) and electronic check transactions.
If you order a registration AND decal, your items will be mailed to your address. If you JUST need a duplicate registration card, you’ll be emailed a PDF copy* for you to print.
* NOTE: The online system is often unavailable on Sundays between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. for scheduled upkeep.
Replace by Mail
Replacing your Wisconsin registration certificate and/or plate sticker by mail is easy. Simply provide the following:
- A completed Duplicate Certificate of Registration Application (Form MV2026).
- A check for the $2 duplicate registration fee made payable to the “Registration Fee Trust”.
