I'm in the military and am leaving on an assignment to another state. Is there anything I need to do before I go?
You won't need to do anything before you ship out. Your driver's license will not expire while you are away, and you will have 90 days to get to a DMV office to renew it when you return. For more details, see our section on drivers in the military.
How can I schedule a driving skills test?
The Wisconsin DMV has a special telephone service that you can use to schedule your road test. Call any of these numbers:
- Milwaukee area: (414) 266-1028
- Madison area: (608) 266-1442
- Any other areas: (888) 368-9556
- Hearing Impaired: (877) 777-8980
Follow the prompts to schedule your road test. Here's the information you'll need to be prepared to enter into the automated system:
- Your Social Security number.
- Your instruction permit number.
- Date of birth.
- A daytime phone number.

Oh, no! My driver's license expired and I don't know what to do.
Don't panic. The Wisconsin DMV makes it easy to renew your license. Since renewals last eight years, people sometimes lose track of the time between renewals, so the Wisconsin DMV sends out a reminder to your about 45 days prior to the expiration date.
However, if you miss your renewal date, there's no penalty, other than a $5 late fee.
