Regular Driver's License (Class D)

For an unrestricted license you must have:

  • 20/100 vision or better in at least one eye.
  • 20 degree field of vision from center in at least one eye.

If your vision does not meet the aforementioned standards, you may be issued a restricted license, require a recommendation from a vision specialist, or even be asked to retake a driving test.

The state will remove a corrective lenses restriction from your license following successful laser eye surgery.

Commercial Driver's License

  • 20/40 vision or better in each eye.
  • Must be able to distinguish traffic signal colors.
  • Possess in each eye 70 degree field of vision from center.

If you are a commercial driver who has been grandfathered or is exempt from state or federal vision standards, you must meet the following Wisconsin vision requirements:

  • 20/60 vision or better in each eye.
  • 70 degree field of vision from center in at least one eye.

Bus Endorsement

  • You must be able to distinguish traffic signal colors.
  • 20/40 vision or better in each eye.
  • 70 degree field of vision from center in each eye.

Hearing Impaired Drivers

There are no restrictions for a regular driver's license. However, the state does ban deaf drivers from operating school buses and vans.

Seizures

  • To be license-eligible, you must be seizure-free for a minimum of three months.
  • Depending on your medical condition, you may be asked to retake a road test and/or furnish a medical report.

For questions, contact the Medical Review Unit at (608) 266-2327.

Aging Drivers

There are no provisions for elderly drivers.

Reporting an Incompetent Driver

Contact the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's (WisDOT) Medical Review Unit If you harbor suspicions that a driver is not medically fit to be operating a vehicle. To file a report, complete and submit a Driver Condition or Behavior Report form. You can snare this form at any DMV service center.

Positive driver identification is required for WisDOT to initiate action. If the driver is unknown to you, another person must verify the information contained in your report.

WisDOT will not investigate any driver based exclusively on old age or a diagnosis.

Testing Accommodations for Drivers with Disabilities

Contact the DMV at (800) 924-3570 regarding any special testing accommodations.
