511 Traffic Systems

You've probably used 411, you're definitely familiar with 911, but have you taken advantage of your state's 511 traffic system?

If you commute daily on our nation's highways, or you're planning an upcoming road trip, the 511 system can be an invaluable resource to you. Keep reading for information on what the 511 system provides, states that currently participate, and extra features you may be able to take advantage of in your state.

What Is the 511 Traffic System?

The 511 system is a national traveler's resource set up and run by the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The system allows drivers in participating states/cities to dial “511" on their phones and receive real-time traffic information, such as:

  • Road closures.
  • Accidents.
  • Route detours.
  • Weather alerts.
  • AMBER alerts.
  • Border crossing wait times.
  • Highway conditions.
  • Ride-sharing details.
  • Live camera feeds.

Many states currently participate in the 511 system; see below for a list of participating states and their options for accessibility.

How Do I Use the 511 System?

Depending on your participating state, you may have any or all of the following options to access the 511 traffic system available to you:

  • Dialing 511 on your phone (all participating states).
  • Accessing your state's online 511 homepage.
  • Utilizing a smartphone app.
  • Checking your state's social media accounts.

Below are the states currently participating in the Federal Highway Administration's 511 traffic system. You'll also find the various ways you're able to access the system while on the go.

If you DO NOT see your state below, don't worry—many states are currently in the process of funding a 511 system of their own. To stay up to date, keep checking the FHWA's 511 Deployment Map and stay informed on your state's status.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure you are familiar with your state's cell phone laws. If you are not allowed to use your phone while driving, pull over before accessing the 511 system—you don't want to get a traffic ticket!
