Registration Renewals

The Washington, D.C., Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has provided hassle-free, convenient ways to renew your registration. You can bring your renewal notice and required materials to any Wachovia Bank in the District of Columbia, mail your documents to the DMV, or apply for renewal online. You can also go to any DMV station in person to renew. Keep in mind that your vehicle's inspection must be up to date if you want to renew your registration.
Renew in Person
Bring the following documents to a DMV location or a D.C. Wachovia Bank:
- Document to identify your vehicle: renewal notice, vehicle identification number (VIN), title number, tag number, or registration certificate.
- Your District of Columbia driver's license, learner's permit, or ID card.
- Proof of D.C. insurance: copy of your insurance policy, your insurance card, or a letter of certification from your insurance company.
- If you need to change your address on your registration, bring proof of residency.
- If your car is leased or if it is a company car, you'll need to provide a power of attorney from the registered owners authorizing you to renew the vehicle's registration.
Renew Online
You can renew your registration online to avoid standing in lines at the DMV. Make sure that you meet the requirements to renew online.
Renew by Mail
If you'd like to mail your registration renewal, you can do so by following the instructions on your renewal reminder. Note that the DMV doesn't accept cash by mail. It usually takes about 15 days to process a registration renewal.
