Study Guides for Drivers
Rather than publish driving manuals online, the District of Columbia Department of Motor Vehicles prints study guides for the various classes of license you can apply for. Those seeking a driver handbook or motorcycle manual will need to pick up a study guide in person at a DMV driver services location.
The DC DMV also publishes a booklet for commercial drivers called the DC Commercial Driver's License Manual. This booklet is also only available in print form, and you must visit the main DMV service location at 301 C St. NW to pick up a copy.
CDL Manual
The CDL manual focuses on the specialized knowledge you'll need in order to pass the written and road tests for a commercial driver's license. The manual, which has been recently updated to bring the DC requirements into compliance with the federal regulations, covers all classes of CDL and all endorsements.
The CDL manual also contains an overview of the on-road driving test that you will have to pass in order to get your CDL. The guide lists the items that you should bring with you on the day of your test and how you should prepare. It's important to read this section, because if you don't satisfy these requirements the first time, you will have to reschedule your driving test and try again.
This manual explains what the test examiner will be looking for as he evaluates your driving skills. Then it provides questions and answers about District of Columbia traffic regulations as they pertain to operating commercial vehicles.
Study this guide before you go in to take your written exam, as you will not be allowed to refer to it during your test.
