Registration Renewals

How You Can Renew
Washington's Department of Licensing (DOL) requires all vehicles to register annually. It's a simple requirement that allows you to renew online, in person, or by mail.
What To Do Before You Renew
The DOL will send you a renewal notice several weeks prior to your registration's expiration date. Before you renew, you must:
- Pay any unpaid parking tickets and subsequent late fees.
- Pay a Federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, if your vehicle carries a declared gross weight of over 55,000 pounds.
- Pass an emissions test, if required by your county.
Online Renewal
Renewing online takes minutes to complete. If your address has changed, update it before renewing. Otherwise, your new registration and license plate tabs will be mailed to your former address.
Mail Renewal
Follow the instructions on the back of your renewal notice. You'll be instructed where to send it and what to pay. Mail is the slowest of the three renewal options. If you opt for this route, do so early.
In Person Renewal
To renew in the flesh, visit any vehicle licensing office. When you arrive, be prepared to provide your license, proof of residence, and the ability to pay all applicable fees. You do not need to bring the renewal notice.
Other Miscellaneous Stuff
- If you are the hyper-organized type, you can renew your registration up to six months before the expiration date.
- Special plates cost more to renew.
- Expect additional service fees if you renew through a vehicle subagent.
