What is the Enhanced Driver License, and do I need one?

The Washington Enhanced Driver License, or EDL, is unique in that it acts as a driver's license and as a passport alternative for re-entering the country at land and sea border crossings. The EDL aims to help sustain interaction such as trade and travel and increase border security while staying in congruence with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI).

No one is required to get an EDL, but anyone who is at least 18 years old can apply for one. Drivers who are 16 and 17 years old can apply for Enhanced Intermediate Driver Licenses, and non-drivers can apply for Enhanced ID Cards.

For more information, check out Washington's History of the EDL/ID Program and EDL/ID facts.
