License Plate FAQs
Walked out to my car this morning and whoosh! the plates were gone. What now?
Complete a Replacement Plate Application and submit it along with the appropriate fee ($10 per plate).
While driving over the Middlebury Gap, I swerved to miss a large raccoon and slammed into a tree stump, bending the front plate like a cherrystone clam shell. Do I need to replace it?
Legally, your license plate must be legible. If you can't bend it back into place, you must file a Replacement Plate Application. Cost: $10.
Can I get a refund on my plates/registration if I totalled my car in a collision?
Indeed you can. To do so, return your license plates to the DMV. The Finance and Management Department will then issue you a refund based on the number of months remaining on your registration.
Can I apply for a low number license plate?
Sure, provided you don't already have three low number plates registered under your name and you have not been assigned a low number in the last 12 months. To apply complete an aptly named Application for Assignment of a Low Numbered Registration.
Where do the funds for Vermont's Conservation license plate go to?
The funds generated from these plates are allocated to the Nongame Wildlife Fund and the Watershed Grant Fund. For more information contact Vermont's Fish and Wildlife Department.
Even though motorcycle plates are smaller, can I still order a vanity plate?
Yes, but instead of the maximum seven characters on regular plates, you're allowed six. This also applies to mopeds and small trailers.
What's the skinny on antique license plates?
You can apply for antique license plates if your vehicle is 25 years old or older and used only for parades, exhibitions and car club activities. To apply, complete Vermont's registration application, making sure to check the antique box in section 1B.
If I move out of state, do I need to surrender my license plates?
Yes. To effectively cancel your vehicle registration with the DMV, mail your Vermont plates back once you've settled in your new state.
