Registration Renewals

Renewing Your Registration
Before your registration expires, the Virginia DMV will mail a renewal notice to you. You can then renew the registration at any customer service center, by phone, by mail, or online.
Online Information
If you renew online, you must pay with a credit or debit card, or by electronically withdrawing funds from your checking account. There is no additional fee for using the Internet. In fact, as of July 1, 2008, the Virginia DMV began lowering the cost of renewals by $1 for online renewals. Expect your new registration to arrive within 15 days of filing.
Phone Information
Call (888) 337-4782 to renew by phone. Payment by credit card (Visa, Discover, American Express, MasterCard) is your only option. When calling, have your credit card, renewal notice, and, if required, emissions certificate in front of you. Don't expect a real voice. Your new registration should arrive in the mail within 15 days.
Mail Option
Send your completed renewal form and payment to:
- Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles
- Attn: Renewal Center
- P.O. Box 27412
- Richmond, Virginia 23269-0001
Your new registration should arrive within 15 days.
In Person Option
To an effort to cut down on in person renewals and encourage the use of other methods, the Virginia DMV, as of July 1, 2008, will now charge an extra $5 fee for renewing at the DMV office.
Bring your renewal form and the ability to pay your registration fee (cash, check, credit card, debit card) to any customer service center. You'll be rewarded by immediately receiving your new registration certificate.
Incorrect Information on Renewal Form
If any of the information on your renewal form is incorrect, call the DMV at either (866) 368-5463 or (800) 435-5137.
