    Glasses/Contacts

    • If you wear glasses or contacts to pass a vision test, your license will reflect this restriction, requiring you to don them while driving.
    • You can have the "glasses/contacts restriction" removed following successful laser surgery. Visit any Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) service center and apply for a replacement license.

    Top Hearing

There are no restrictions for hearing impaired drivers. Your driver's license will recognize your impairment, so in case you're pulled over, legal authorities will be aware of your disability.

    Top Seizures

You must be seizure-free for at least six months to qualify for a Virginia driver's license.

If you experience a seizure, blackout or loss of consciousness while licensed, the DMV will suspend your driving freedoms for six months. If you remain seizure-free during this time, you'll be required to go through a review process before your license can be reinstated. As part of the review may be required you to:

    • Pass a road test.
    • Pass a knowledge test.
    • Have your doctor submit a medical statement.
    • Have either your optometrist or ophthalmologist provide a vision statement.
    • Be evaluated by a Driver Rehabilitation Specialist.

Based on the DMV's assessment of your medical statements or test results it may recommend that:

    • Your license be suspended.
    • Your license be restricted.
    • You submit to periodic vision or medical tests.
    • You agree to a driver evaluation.

    Top Aging Drivers

During license renewal drivers 80 or older must submit to a vision test.
