Don't know how it happened but my license plates are missing. What now?

This may come as no surprise, but you must replace the plates. To do so, complete a Vehicle Registration Application and pay a $10 fee. You can either do this by visiting any customer service center or mailing it to:

  • Virginia DMV
  • Attn: Titles and Registration Work Center
  • P.O. Box 27412
  • Richmond, Virginia 23269

I skidded my car off the road and into a bicycle rack. The front license plate is now bent like a crepe. Do I need to replace it?

Yes. All license plates must be legible. To order a replacement plate, follow the same steps as replacing a lost plate, by completing a Vehicle Registration Application and paying a $10 fee. You can either do this by visiting any customer service center or mailing it to:

  • Virginia DMV
  • Attn: Titles and Registration Work Center
  • P.O. Box 27412
  • Richmond, Virginia 23269

What is a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)?

Are there any hidden charges if I order new license plates via the Internet?

No. Using the internet is no different than ordering in person or through the mail. You'll only pay for license plate charges.

Can my group propose a special license plate?

Absolutely. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) encourages it. But before the DMV will agree to a special interest plate, your group must meet the the following requirements:

  • Provide electronic media artwork for the license plate design.
  • Provide proper authorization for use of the proposed license plate's logo and design.
  • Blueprint a plan for design approval.
  • Provide a minimum of 350 prepaid applications for the plates.

Approximately how long does it take for a proposed special license plate to reach the streets?

Beginning with the proposal process, it generally takes nine months, provided, of course, there are no unexpected delays.

How long must I wait for my license plates if I order them online?

Don't expect overnight service. If the DMV has your plate in inventory, expect a wait of two to four weeks. If you are ordering a specialized plate, you better take a patience pill. Specialized plates take four to six weeks.

Does the DMV offer antique plates?

Yes, it does. Visit our License Plates & Placards page to see if your vehicle qualifies for the plates, and to learn how to apply for them.

Do I need to surrender my license plates?

If you're moving out of state, you should, but it's not required by law. Surrendering plates is an extra step you can take to protect your identity. You might also qualify for a partial refund of your registration fees.

If you sell your vehicle, cancel liability insurance on the vehicle, or if your insurance provider cancels the insurance, then you are required by law to surrender your plates. Take them with your registration to the nearest DMV location, or mail them to:

  • Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles
  • P.O. Box 27412
  • Richmond, VA 23269
