Permanent Moves

Address Change for Driver's License

Those leaving Utah on a permanent basis aren't required to notify the Driver License Division of the move.

However, you can opt to update your information with the agency online, by calling (801) 965-4437, or by visiting a driver license office.

You may also accomplish this task by sending a letter containing your name, license number, last four digits of your Social Security number, and new address to:

  • Driver License Division
  • P.O. Box 30560
  • Salt Lake City, UT 84130-0560

It's free to change your address with the Driver License Division.

Registration Cancellation

While it's not required, it's a good idea to surrender your Utah license plates once you've received your plates from your new state.

To surrender the plates, simply bring them by a motor vehicle office, or send them with an explanatory note to:

  • Utah State Tax Commission
  • Motor Vehicle Division
  • 210 N. 1950 W.
  • Salt Lake City, UT 84134

The state doesn't offer refunds on the unused portion of your registration.

Insurance

Alert your vehicle insurance company of your change of address.

Temporary Moves

Address Change for Driver's License

Those leaving Utah on a temporary basis must alert the Driver License Division of the change of address within 10 days of the move. Simply notifying the post office of the change isn't sufficient, since mail sent by the state isn't forwarded.

Update your information with the agency online, by calling (801) 965-4437, or by visiting a driver license office.

You may also send a letter containing your name, license number, last four digits of your Social Security number, and new address to:

  • Driver License Division
  • P.O. Box 30560
  • Salt Lake City, UT 84130-0560

Changing your address doesn't mean you'll automatically be granted a new license with the updated address. The agency encourages you to simply tape your new address to the back of your current license.

Fees

It's free to change your address with the Driver License Division.

Address Change for Registration

While it's not required for temporary moves, you may change your address on your registration.

To do so, stop by a motor vehicle office, or send a letter containing your name, license plate number, and new address to :

  • Utah State Tax Commission
  • Motor Vehicle Division
  • 210 N. 1950 W.
  • Salt Lake City, UT 84134

If you notify the state about the move at least three months before your registration due date, your registration renewal packet will be delivered to your new address.

It's free to change your registration address with the state.

Insurance

Be sure to notify your vehicle insurance company of your change of address.

Preparing for the Move

Make matters easier for yourself by either before or shortly after moving visiting our New to Your State section, which gives an overview of driving-related tasks that should be tackled.

Military Information

Those in the military who will be temporarily living outside of Utah should check out our Drivers in the Military section for important registration and license information regarding their unique situation.
