We cover topics such as how to order standard and specialty plates in our License Plates and Placards section.

Here are the answers to some other common questions:

Is there someplace that I may view all the available types of special plates?

Yep. The Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has an area devoted just to this. You can see a picture of each plate, and learn how much the plate costs and who may order it.

How do I renew my plates?

You have three choices to do this: in person, at a renewal station , or online. See our registration section for complete details.

What vehicles need to have a license plate?

Here's a simple rule for this: if you can register the vehicle, it will need to have a plate.

How do I order disability plates and placards?

There isn't a quick answer for this, but we cover the issue in our Drivers with Disabilities section.

What is a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)?

I just moved here. How many plates are required on a car?

Two. The same is true for trucks.

How do I replace a damaged plate?

Damaged or lost plates and decals may be replaced by heading to a DMV office, armed with your current registration card. You'll be issued the same kind of plate, along with the decals, for $10.

You may also opt to replace the plates and decals by mail. Just include a note making your request, a copy of your registration, and the $13 payment to:

  • Division of Motor Vehicles
  • Mail and Correspondence
  • 210 N. 1950 West
  • Salt Lake City, UT 84134

My plates were stolen. What should I do?

Just follow the same procedures to replace a damaged or lost plate.

What are the requirements for antique license plates?

If your vehicle's model is 1973 or older, you may display an original-issue license plate. The DMV must determine that your plate has not been issued to another vehicle and does not compete with a current plate series.

If I move out of state, do I need to surrender my license plates?

Utah does not require you to surrender your plates back to the DMV, but you certainly can. Take them to any DMV office, or mail the plates, with an explanatory note, to:

  • Utah State Tax Commission
  • Motor Vehicle Division
  • 210 N. 1950 W.
  • Salt Lake City, UT 84134
