Replacing a Lost Title in Texas

The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) handles the issuance of all new and duplicate titles in the state. To replace a title:

  • Complete an Application for a Certified Copy of Certificate of Title (Form VTR-34).
  • Provide your driver's license. (A copy by mail).
  • Pay the $2 title fee by mail or $5.45 title fee in person.

Applying for a Duplicate TX Title

NOTE: If your title is in the names of more than one owner, you must obtain the signatures of all owners.

You can replace a lost or damaged Texas title by mail or in person at your local TX DMV office.

If there is a lien on your vehicle, the lienholder wiil have to submit the application for certified copy of the title.

Power of Attorney

You can sign a limited power of attorney for someone else to get the title for you, if you can't get to the title office yourself. With that power of attorney, the person will also need to show their own photo ID as well as a copy of yours.

Never Received Your Vehicle Title?

If you submitted your application for a new vehicle title in Texas more than 30 business days ago but did not receive it, you should contact the TX Department of Motor Vehicles at (888) 368-4689 or (512) 465-3000.

NOTE: The DMV will mail the title to the lienholder if there is a lien on your vehicle.

Errors on Your Title?

If you happen to notice your name spelled incorrectly on your title receipt, you will need to contact the offices of the TX DMV at (888) DMV-GoTx ((888) 368-4689) or your local TxDMV regional service center.

The DMV will correct the error at no charge if it is determined that the error was caused by their offices. On the other hand, if the DMV produced an incorrect title using the information you listed on the application, you (or your lienholder, if applicable) must submit another title application and the required fees to your local county tax office for correction.
