Don't Become a Victim of Identity Theft
A stolen driver's license can be the gateway for many crimes against you, your credit, and your name. If your driver's license is stolen and used fraudulently, you must make a police report and then take this report to your local driver license office in order to be issued a new license and license number.
Identity theft is a crime that is on the rise. To help you protect yourself, Texas has provided information on ID theft and what you must do if this happens to you. You can also download a Forgery Affidavit; you may need to fill this out when applying for your replacement license.
One warning: The information provided on the state's ID theft page says that you need only contact one of the three major credit bureaus, since "they share information." While this is true, time is of the essence in battling any identity theft situation. It is better to immediately contact each of the credit agencies individually, by phone, rather than relying on the information-sharing process.
Foreign Driver Licenses
If you possess a foreign driver license, are between the ages of 18 and 75, and are now in Texas for an extended period or permanently, the state will recognize your license for up to one year following your arrival. This only applies for foreign nationals of countries that have reciprocity with the United States―in other words, countries that offer a similar privilege to U.S. citizens who are in their nation.
