Page OverviewDriver's License and ID Card
To change your name on your driver's license or ID, you'll need to visit your local driver license office with certified documents and the $11 fee. The certified documents vary, depending on the situation, but could be a marriage certificate, divorce decree, naturalization or adoption papers, or other court document showing your name change.
Social Security Card
An updated Social Security card, reflecting your name change, is not required. However, the Department of Public Safety recommends amending your Social Security card as quickly as possible after updating your driver's license.
To change your name with the Social Security Administration (SSA), visit the agency's site. Give the agency at least 48 hours to process your request.
Registrations and Titles
When you change your name on your vehicle title, your vehicle registration is changed automatically, and will be reflected on your next renewal notice. Just take the certified documents, a copy of your current title and registration papers, and a $28 fee to your county tax office to apply for a corrected title. The certified documents must show your name change, and may include a marriage certificate, divorce decree, naturalization or adoption papers, or other court documents.
