Traffic Schools in Tennessee

Tennessee offers a special Driver Improvement program through the Department of Safety for all resident drivers. This department oversees the driving records for all licensed drivers in the state.
Traffic schools provide many benefits. By successfully completing a course, not only will your driving skills improve, but you may also qualify for lower insurance premiums, reduce pending suspension time of your driving privileges, or avoid suspension altogether. To obtain any of these extra benefits, you must attend one of the state-approved schools.
Traffic Tickets
Another benefit of traffic school is the potential dismissal of a traffic ticket. The local courts decide on an individual basis whether traffic tickets can be dismissed due to your participation in a traffic school. The decision will be based on your current violation and your previous driving history.
Points and Suspensions
The Department of Safety sends notices to drivers who approach suspensions due to high point tallies on their driving record. Attending traffic school could help reduce points on your record, but more importantly, it will teach you better driving habits that will help you prevent future points.
Insurance Premiums
Lowering the cost of insurance is another reason you may be thinking of traffic school. Before enrolling, contact your own insurance company to ask questions. Find out if you're eligible for a discount and what it is. Some insurance companies offer discounts based on age or driving record; some disqualify drivers based on the same criteria. If you qualify for a discount, compare it to the cost of the course; some discounts may not offset the course cost.
Senior Drivers
If you're age 50 or older, check with the AARP for a driver refresher class. These monthly courses are held in many cities and towns for only $10, and your insurance company discount will likely be greater, so you'll be able to improve your driving AND save money.
Driving Under the Influence
Tennessee enforces strict laws for drivers driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or drugs. If convicted of DUI, you'll face hefty fines, possible jail time, and loss of driving privileges. You'll also be required to complete and pass an alcohol education program for drivers. For more information of the DUI program within the state, be sure to check out DMV.org's special DUI & DWI pages.
