Top Changing Name on a Title and Registration

Any kind of name change requires notifying South Dakota's Motor Vehicles Division (DMV). This applies to divorce, marriage, adoption, and even artistic expression.

To update, bring your title and $5 to your county treasurer's office. Your agent will then send your title to the MVD's main office in Pierre. New title and registration certificates will be mailed to your home.

If your name changed due to divorce, and there are two names on the title separated by "and," you and your bygone spouse must both sign off on the title.

Top Changing Name on a License or ID Card

In order to update your name on your driver's license or ID, you need to visit your local license exam station. Be sure to bring documents applying to your situation (divorce decree, marriage license or a legal form that shows your name change) and one other form of identification. There you'll complete a duplicate license application (unavailable online) and be asked to pay a $6 fee.

An updated Social Security card, reflecting your name change, is not required. But if you want to change your name with the Social Security Administration (SSA), visit the agency's site. Give the agency at least 48 hours to process your request.
