Top1) Determine the Status of Your Registration

You must renew your vehicle registration annually.

It's illegal to drive within the state with an expired registration, and you can't renew your registration without a current auto insurance policy. If you need to obtain insurance or switch providers, see our Insurance Center for a list of carriers and also to find the best rates.

Register a Vehicle in PA for the First Time

Please visit our Car Registration page to determine how to handle an initial registration, such as you need to do after buying a vehicle or recently moving to the state.

Register a Non-Operational Vehicle

The state doesn't offer a special registration for vehicles that are non-operational; the renewal procedure is the same as that for operational vehicles.

If you'd like to register an operational vehicle but only on a seasonal basis, complete and submit the Application for Seasonal Vehicle Registration according to the instructions provided.

Top2) Check Your Renewal Notice

Before your registration expires, you should receive a renewal notice in the mail. You don't have to have this notice in order to renew, but if you didn't receive the notice you may apply for one with a Request for Registration/Renewals application.

Your renewal notice may also include information about your vehicle's annual emissions inspection. This inspection generally occurs around the same time as your vehicle's annual safety inspection. For more information, visit Smog & Emission Checks.

Top3) Calculate Your Fees

The standard renewal fee is $36.

However, retired individuals only pay $10. Read the state's fact sheet on the matter to see if you qualify for the discount. If you do, complete Form MV-371 to apply.

Remember, everyone renewing a registration needs to have current auto insurance. So, it's a logical time to verify that your insurance is still valid, you're getting the best price possible, and possibly shop for a new provider.

Avoid Late Fees and Penalties

The state doesn't automatically punish those who are tardy in renewing their registrations, but it is illegal to drive with expired tags.

Top4) Renew Online, In Person, or By Mail

Renew Online

You can't renew using this method if the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) doesn't have your current name and address on record, or if the renewal expiration date is over six months away. Also, if you're paying the reduced $10 renewal fee, you must renew in person or by mail.

To renew online:

1. If applicable, take care of your vehicle's emissions inspection.
2. Have your license plate number, title number, and insurance card handy.
3. Be able to pay your fee with a valid American Express, Discover, MasterCard, or Visa credit or debit card.
4. Go to the online renewal site and follow the instructions given.
5. Print your receipt and your temporary registration certificate; use the certificate until your renewal material arrives by mail within the next 10 business days.

Renew in Person

1. Have your vehicle's emissions inspected, if applicable.
2. Gather your current registration or renewal notice, along with your proof of insurance.
3. Have your fee in the form of cash, a check, or a money order.
4. Go to local messenger service or Driver and Vehicle Service location.

Renew by Mail

1. Find your renewal notice. Pay attention to any information about an emissions inspection.
2. Make your check or money order for the fee payable to PennDOT.
3. Send the notice and fee payment to the address indicated on the notice.
4. Expect your renewal material to arrive in the mail within 10 business days.

Be sure to properly place your renewal stickers on your plates. The instructions provided will help you.

Top6) Get a Tax Deduction

Some states charge their registration renewal fees at least partially on the estimated value of the vehicle, acting as a personal property tax. In those states, you can claim some or all of your renewal fee as a deduction on your tax return.

However, because Pennsylvania doesn't figure its renewal fees in this method, you're not eligible for this tax deduction.

Top7) Do Your Part to Keep Our Roadways Safe

You've now completed your legal renewal requirement, but there are voluntary steps you can take to make travel safer for you―and your fellow motorists.

Start with keeping your car in top shape. This means regularly changing your oil and having periodic tune-ups. Also, with the state's hilly roads and sometimes treacherous weather, be sure you're riding on good wheels. Rotate your tires at least a couple times of year, and when the tread depth wears down, replace your tires. And, find a quality, reliable mechanic who can spot trouble before it starts.

It's also wise to invest in an after-market warranty so you can handle repairs that otherwise might be too costly. Joining a roadside assistance program is a good way to deal with those emergency situations that may arise.
