DMV Employment

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT} offers both civil service jobs and jobs that don't fall into the civil service category.
Civil Service Employment
Even though you might be applying for a job with PennDOT, the entire application process is administered by the State Civil Service Commission.
The process for seeking a civil service job is more than just inking out an application and having a past employer vouch for your ability to arrive to work on time. Instead, it involves a long series of steps with no guarantees of even getting interviewed.
Civil Service Application Process
- Scan the Summary of Civil Service Examinations, which updates daily with new job and test announcements.
- Read the test announcements carefully and make sure your job experience matches the needed job requirements.
- Once you've pinpointed a job, fill out a Civil Service Application for Employment.
- If a test is required, you will be notified of a date, time, and location to take your civil service exam.
- If you pass the exam, your name will be added to a list of qualified hopefuls. Applicants with the highest test scores and most job experience will be ranked at the top of the list and have the best chance of being interviewed.
Noncivil Service
All noncivil service jobs are managed by the Bureau of State Employment. And unlike civil service jobs, all noncivil service jobs, except for clerk typist, do not require qualifying tests.
Noncivil Service Application Process
- Complete a Personal Data Sheet.
- Prepare a resume.
- Mail the Personal Data Sheet and resume to:
- Bureau of State Employment
- 110 Finance Building
- Harrisburg, PA 17120-0018
- The bureau will then mail you an acknowledgment card verifying that your information is now on file.
Your resume and Personal Data Sheet will serve as a blanket application for all noncivil service job vacancies. The bureau will use your information to decide whether or not to recommend you for vacancies in or near the city where you live.
Unless you state otherwise, your information will be kept on file for one year.
If you have questions, you can call the Bureau of State Employment at (717) 787-5703.
