License Plate FAQs
DMV.ORG aims to provide all the information you need when it comes to Oregon license plates in our License Plates & Placards section. Whether you've overlooked something, or simply can't find what you need, check our frequently asked questions and answers below.
How do I replace lost or stolen plates and stickers?
To replace your license plates, you will have to complete an Application for Registration, Renewal, Replacement or Transfer Plates and/or Stickers. You can either complete a regular form or a fillable form.
See the following for a breakdown of related fees:
- Replacing plates and stickers 120 days before your registration's expiration date costs $15.
- Replacing plates during the normal renewal period (within 120 days of your registration's expiration date) costs $10. Note that you will also have to pay an additional fee to renew your registration. See the DMV's list of registration fees.
- Replacing stickers only costs $10.
Send your application and fees to the following address:
- DMV Vehicle Mall
- 1905 Lana Ave. NE
- Salem, OR 97314
The DMV accepts only checks or money orders. Make them payable to "Oregon DMV."
How do I replace my license plates if I don't have a regular vehicle?
For other types of vehicles (heavy vehicles, salvage vehicles, camper trailers, motor homes, etc.), call (503) 945-5000. If you're in Portland, call (503) 299-9999.
What do I do if I need to replace my month sticker? I placed it in the wrong area and it's damaged.
DMV doesn't charge anything to replace a month sticker. Contact your local DMV office for a replacement.
Where do I put the stickers on my license plate?
It's important to correctly put stickers on your license plates. Put the year sticker on the bottom right. Put the month sticker on the bottom left. Make sure to apply stickers on both the front and rear plates.
Note that most vehicles get new year stickers only, leaving the month stickers the same. If you need a month sticker, contact your local DMV office for a free replacement.
How do I transfer my plates to another vehicle?
Complete the Oregon DMV's application for plate transfer. The DMV charges $6 for plate transfers, but keep in mind that if you need to renew your registration, you'll have to pay an additional fee.
How do I get specialty plates or personalized plates?
You can pick which specialty plate you want by seeing the DMV's plate choices. If you are using a renewal reminder to get new plates, you can mail your reminder to the DMV or renew online. Most DMV offices will replace and renew plates, too. Note the specialty license plate you would like and DMV will charge you the specified amount.
To learn how to get custom plates, see DMV.ORG's page on personalized plates.
Does the DMV offer antique plates?
Yes. Actually, the organization offers two types of plates for older vehicles: antique and special interest.
Visit our License Plates & Placards page for details about the plates, including how to apply for them.
Do I need to surrender my plates?
You are not required to surrender plates when you move out of state, but it's still a good idea. Check our License Plates & Placards page for more details.
