DMV Employment
Employment with the Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is handled through the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT).
ODOT's employment application and hiring process is conducted through the department's Strategic Online Application and Recruitment System (SOLAR), which allows applicants to search and apply for jobs, save and print applications, and even subscribe to updates on job opportunities.
The SOLAR Web site recommends use of the Internet Explorer browser for applying, saving, submitting, and accessing forms; but other browsers, including Opera and Firefox, also work with the site. However, regardless of browser, users should follow the SOLAR recommendation that you back up any data you enter, in a separate document or file.
Job seekers may find the SOLAR system's searchable job database useful with the ability to search jobs based on criteria such as job title, job class, or department.
ODOT offers the following tips for completing an application and seeking employment with the DMV, or other ODOT department:
- Read job announcements and descriptions carefully and strictly follow instructions and meet requirements.
- Display how your background applies to the specific job description and requirements.
- Discuss qualifying experience in detail in the "major duties" section.
- List jobs relevant to applicable position.
- Do not use acronyms or jargon.
- Ensure the application is completed.
- Provide the number of average hours worked per week, do not be vague.
- Ensure neat handwriting that is legible, if completed by hand.
- Sign and date application form.
- Staple additional documentation or forms to the application form.
- Keep your own copy of the application and associated documents or forms.
- Be sure to submit the application no later than 5 p.m. on the closing date from the job announcement.
Employment applications are also accepted by mail, fax or in person, but instant e-mail acknowledgment is sent to all applicants who respond using the Internet.
ODOT advises that many of the employment opportunities available at the DMV and other departments require response to supplemental questions, as well as completed applications for employment. Check the profile part of the job announcement for instructions that may apply. Applicants are advised to focus on their own professional achievements, rather than those of teams, divisions or companies. Also avoid vague responses, such as, "I was in the budget department."
Other tips when applying for a DMV or other ODOT position:
- Be thorough in responses, but remain concise, and stick to facts, rather than theory or philosophy.
- Avoid government or other lingo.
ODOT also provides a contact form online for questions and comments.
