Top Seizures and Other Medical Conditions

If the Department of Public Safety (DPS) feels someone has a condition which could interfere with the ability to drive safely, it can require additional medical and driver testing. Those needing to undergo a medical evaluation should do so within their county, if possible.

Diabetes, epilepsy, and other illnesses which can involve a loss of consciousness require closer evaluation and continual monitoring. In fact, you cannot apply for a license if you've experienced a seizure within the last six months.

    Driver Improvement Classes

Some individuals may also be asked to complete a driver improvement class in order to gain or retain driving privileges. These classes can help teach you how to drive with your condition.

    Appeal

If you can't prove that you're fit to drive safely, the DPS may revoke your driver's license.

If you're denied driving privileges due to a medical condition, you have the right to appeal the decision.

    Top Restricted Licenses

The DPS, when possible, tries to work with those with disabling medical conditions to allow them to keep their driving privileges. In many cases, a restricted license with limited driving privileges may be granted as an alternative to simply cancelling a driver's license.

For instance, someone with diminished vision may be allowed to drive only during daylight. Or, someone who is hearing-impaired may need to install a left outside rear vision mirror on their vehicle.

In our Drivers with Disabilities sections, we list some of these driver license restrictions.

    Top Reporting an Unsafe Driver

If you feel someone may no longer be fit to drive, you may express your concerns in writing to the DPS.

Include your name and address and the specific reasons for your concern. Also include as much information as you can about the driver's identity, to help ensure the DPS targets the right individual.

    Send the letter to:

    • Department of Public Safety, Driver Improvement
    • P.O. Box 11415
    • Oklahoma City, OK 73136-0415

The DPS will review the information. If it feels your concerns are warranted, it may request that the driver undergo a medical evaluation, as well driver testing.

    Refusal to Cooperate

The DPS will automatically cancel the licenses of those who refuse to cooperate.

Top Special Testing for Elderly Drivers

While Oklahoma can impose additional licensing requirements on those with certain medical conditions, the state does not impose any special testing or requirements solely based on a driver's age. Therefore, it's up to the individual to know when to turn in his or her keys, or up to vigilant family members and neighbors to report the situation.
