Registration Renewals

Renewal Options
Ohioans have four options when it comes to renewing their vehicle registration: in person, over the phone, through the mail, or online.
In Person
Simply go to a branch agency, and take one acceptable form of identification. If your vehicle is due to have an E-Check inspection completed, you'll need to take proof that your vehicle passed the test.
Phone
Call (866) 675-2837 to renew your registration by phone using an automated system. Be sure to have all the necessary information handy before you call, such as your license plate number, Social Security number, and credit card or check routing number.
You can only select this option if all the information on your registration card remains the same. If anything has changed, you'll need to renew in person or online.
Be sure to include proof that your vehicle passed the E-Check inspection if your vehicle was due to be tested. Then mail everything (including payment) to the address listed on the renewal registration card.
Online
You may renew online through Oplates if you meet the requirements listed on the renewal page. If you leased your car, the leasing company must be on the approved list.
Timing
Your registration will need to be renewed every 12 months. If your registration is within 10 days of its expiration, or if it's already expired, you should renew it at a branch agency.
Fees
Your fee registration renewal will vary depending on where you live, but the cost begins at $28.50 for motorcycles and $34.50 for cars.
Biennial Registration
You can choose to have your registration be up for renewal every two years. Of course, you'll have to pay the registration and permissive tax fees for two years, and you can't get a refund for any unused time. You'll also have to pay a $5.25 deputy registrar fee.
Also, if your vehicle will need to have passed its E-Check inspection during the second year, you can't opt for the biennial registration.
Out-of-State Renewals
If you're outside Ohio and need to renew your registration, you may by so by phone or online. The Bureau of Motor Vehicles outlines the steps you'll need to take.
