Point Reduction in Ohio

Determine Your “Course” of Action
Ohio allows drivers to enroll in a remedial driver course for a two-point credit against the total number of points accumulated within a two-year span.
The course must be state-approved to receive credit. Contact the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) for a list of approved courses in your county.
Course Eligibility
This two-point credit option towards your driving record is restricted to:
- Violations with point totals between two and 11 points
- Once every three years
- A maximum of five credits within your lifetime
Complete a OH Driving Safety Course
The course lasts eight hours. Tuition and schedules vary by schools. To accommodate work schedules, most schools offer weekend classes. A few select schools also offer partial online programs (four hours of online, four hours of classroom).
Submit Requirements to the Court
Course verification comes in the form of a completion certificate. Some schools automatically submit it to the BMV. Others deliver it to you. If you're unsure, ask the course instructor. The BMV will not issue the two-point credit until receiving your course completion certificate.
Check Your Ohio Driving Record
Check your driving record after completing the remedial driver course. Verify that you received the two-point credit. If you notice any errors, contact the BMV.
Get an Auto Insurance Discount
