RV & Motorhome Registration in New York

The Department of Motor Vehicles requires travel trailers and motorhomes to be inspected and registered just like any other passenger vehicle in New York. Follow the instructions on our Car Registration page, but note that your registration fee will be based on the weight of the vehicle.
Since the weight of your RV is likely to far exceed the "6,951 or more" range listed on the DMV's registration fee schedule, expect to pay more than the maximum $140 registration fee listed there. For an original registration, you'll also need to pay $15 for vehicle plates, $50.00 for a new title certificate, and sales and use taxes if applicable in your county.
It's not as simple to have an RV safety inspected as it is a smaller passenger vehicle for the simple reason that many inspection stations have car-sized inspection bays. Call ahead before you show up with your 40-footer, or get a recommendation from your local RV dealer.Other Topics in This Section
