It's fairly painless to replace your title, thanks to New York's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) convenient ordering options and our helpful outlines for each one.

Duplicate Title by Mail

To order a duplicate title by mail you must send:

  • A check for $20.

If you mail by regular postal service send to:

  • New York State Department of Motor Vehicles
  • Title Bureau
  • P.O. Box 2750
  • Albany, New York 12220-0750

If you opt for express mail send to:

  • Duplicate Title Certificates
  • New York State Department of Motor Vehicles
  • 6 Empire State Plaza
  • Albany, NY 12228

Use (518) 486-4714 if you need a Title Service Bureau phone number on your express mail label.

The mail option is extremely slow compared to ordering online or in person. Whereas those two options take five to seven business days to process a duplicate title, ordering by mail takes six to eight weeks. Ouch, huh?

Online Duplicate Title

You can order a duplicate title online only if:

  • The address on your title and registration matches your current mailing address.
  • You own the title.
  • There are no other changes with the information listed on the title.

If you meet these requirements you can go to Replace a Title Certificate Online and begin applying. This online application provides detailed instructions on what to send.

Keep in mind that you cannot use the online service for the following circumstances:

  • To order a duplicate title with the lien removed.
  • To order a duplicate title in the name of a deceased owner.
  • To order a duplicate title using a power of attorney.
  • To order a duplicate title for a boat.

Your new title will be mailed to you within five to seven business days.

Ordering Duplicate Title in Person

To order a duplicate in person visit your local DMV office. When you arrive you'll be asked to complete a Application for Duplicate Title, provide proof of identification, and pay a $20 fee.

Your duplicate title should arrive in the mail within five to seven business days.
