Replacing a Lost Title in New York
It's fairly painless to replace your title, thanks to New York's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) convenient ordering options and our helpful outlines for each one.
Duplicate Title by Mail
To order a duplicate title by mail you must send:
- A fully completed Application for Duplicate Title.
- Photocopied proof of identification.
- A check for $20.
If you mail by regular postal service send to:
- New York State Department of Motor Vehicles
- Title Bureau
- P.O. Box 2750
- Albany, New York 12220-0750
If you opt for express mail send to:
- Duplicate Title Certificates
- New York State Department of Motor Vehicles
- 6 Empire State Plaza
- Albany, NY 12228
Use (518) 486-4714 if you need a Title Service Bureau phone number on your express mail label.
The first class mail option takes five to seven business days. If you order via express mail, you will need to be home when the duplicate title arrives to sign for it.
Online Duplicate Title
You can order a duplicate title online only if:
- The address on your title and registration matches your current mailing address.
- You own the title.
- There are no other changes with the information listed on the title.
If you meet these requirements you can go to Replace a Title Certificate Online and begin applying. This online application provides detailed instructions on what to send.
Keep in mind that you cannot use the online service for the following circumstances:
- To order a duplicate title with the lien removed.
- To order a duplicate title in the name of a deceased owner.
- To order a duplicate title using a power of attorney.
- To order a duplicate title for a boat.
Your new title will be mailed to you within five to seven business days.
Ordering Duplicate Title in Person
To order a duplicate in person visit your local DMV office. When you arrive you'll be asked to complete a Application for Duplicate Title, provide proof of identification, and pay a $20 fee.
Your duplicate title should arrive in the mail within five to seven business days.
