Registration Renewals

Renewing your registration ranks as the easiest transaction you'll ever conduct with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
Online Renewal
The New York DMV offers registration renewal, which―as long as your address hasn't changed―you may use for a passenger vehicle, a small commercial vehicle, a small trailer, or a motorcycle that you did not remove from the road.
After filing allow two weeks for your new registration to arrive in the mail.
Mail Renewal
The DMV will send you a renewal notice 45 to 60 days before your registration expires, and you should follow the instructions on the notice.
If you don't receive a notice, you can check out the DMV's Renew a Vehicle Registration by Mail page which provides detailed instructions on how to submit a renewal form.
It should take no more than two weeks for your new registration to arrive in the mail.
Telephone Renewal
You can renew by telephone by calling (518) 402-4838 and paying an additional $5 fee for the phone transaction.
After calling you can expect your new registration certificate to arrive in the mail within two weeks.
Renewing at a DMV Office
If you opt to renew in person you can do so by visiting any DMV office. Take your renewal form. Or, if you forget, you can fill out a Vehicle Registration/Title Application.
You can also send someone else in your place, such as your wife or husband, to renew. The lone wince to this option is that the DMV maintains stringent second-party application procedures.
When you renew in person there is no waiting for your new registration. The DMV immediately processes it on-site.
Other Notes
If your new registration does not arrive after two weeks you need to contact a DMV office. You can do this in person or by calling any of the DMV Telephone Call Centers.
