What is 511?
America's Traveler Information Number, 511, allows you to access road information from the convenience of your phone. By dialing 511 you can receive road and weather conditions, traffic congestion, and road construction updates for specific routes, regions and municipalities. Some state-systems, such as Georgia's, even provides airport and train information.
Does New York Have 511?
As of January 2008, New York has yet to make 511 available to New York motorists. However, the state has applied for a planning assistance grant.
How About Other States?
If you're traveling around the U.S., check out the 511 deployment website to see which states have 511 enabled. Then while you're in that state, simply dial 511 from a cell or landline phone (it's the cost of a local call) to get the latest local information.
